I was first excited about actress Cynthia Erivo when I saw HBOs The outsider. She has a path around her, not to mention talent that pierces you right away. Even without saying a word, their presence on the screen tells you to stop, see and listen to what you are doing. . . just in case she does. Erico’s presence on the red carpet is very similar. She wears couture dresses by Valentino, Gucci, and Versace that dropped jaws when – and when – they hit the runway (of course, some are custom). But somehow, when Cynthia wears these dresses on the red carpet, your jaw drops even further.

“”[Cynthia] just allows me to be creative and really never says no to a look! ”

It really is her confidence – both in herself and in her stylist Jason Bolden, who has been working with the star since October 2019. “I love creating with Cynthia! She just allows me to be creative and really never says no to a look! A true fashion treasure!” Jason told me about DM. Knowing he’s the mastermind behind some of her most avant-garde, groundbreaking looks is just too cool, but it’s kind of expected. Bolden works with Yara Shahidi, Storm Reid, Ava DuVernay, Alicia Keys, Sabrina Carpenter, Sasha Blane, Taraji P. Henson, Jaden Smith, and Winnie Harlow. Jason doesn’t play shy when it comes to sharing details about how his clients look. He’s quick to confirm dressings and share the backstories behind his work. He even reveals items of clothing that didn’t make the red carpet but had their behind-the-scenes moment on Instagram.

It’s with someone like Erivo (who is also an incredible singer and will portray Aretha Franklin in the upcoming limited series Genius: Aretha) That Jason is able to do his best job and try new things. It’s clear that all of Cynthia’s most memorable fashion moments came from sheer imagination and took shape as she laid out electrifying colors and stepped into unconventional silhouettes. And while they were very much made to uplift Cynthia, they were uplifting to the people too.
