The running back position has been in a brutal state for the past few weeks, and fantasy football owners are sure to have trouble navigating all of the "questionable" players in the position. Josh Jacobs has a new injury ahead of week 13 while David Johnson, Myles Gaskin and Devonta Freeman hope to return from the IR in the coming weeks. Elsewhere, Todd Gurley, D & # 39; Andre Swift and Salvon Ahmed have all missed action and their potential returns could bolster our RB rankings. For now, these injuries are affecting start and seat decisions and owners need to be aware of what these players are doing before week 13.

13TH WEEK STANDARD RANKING:
Quarterback | Run back | Wide receiver | Narrow end | D / ST | Kicker

Is Josh Jacobs playing this week?

Jacobs (ankle) missed training Wednesday due to an ankle injury sustained in last week's loss to the Falcons. The NFL Network's Ian Rapoport originally stated the injury "looked worse than it was," but after a lack of training earlier in the week, Jacobs' status for Week 13 must be viewed as questionable at best.

If Jacobs does not come to the practice field Thursday or Friday, he cannot play. If at some point he can record a limited exercise he will at least have a chance to play, although it would still be questionable.

If Jacobs missed week 13, Devontae Booker would be the return for the Raiders. Booker is available in 90 percent of the Yahoo leagues as of this writing. So feel free to call it up if you need RB depth. Even if Jacobs is playing, Booker should play a solid role considering that Jacobs is not quite 100 percent at this point.

Is Todd Gurley playing this week?

Gurley (knee) missed last week's game after missing training all of last week. The good news for Gurley's owner is that he was back in the field for limited training on Wednesday. This should indicate that he is making progress in his attempt to return from injury.

Gurley still needs watching, and even if he's limited all week, that doesn't guarantee he'll play. More importantly, he must avoid setbacks and any future "DNP" tag will likely indicate that he is not quite ready to play. If so, Brian Hill and Ito Smith would split the work behind the scenes. Both would be decent volume-based flex games, but their matchup with an excellent Saints Run defense would put their caps on.

13TH WEEK PPR RANKING:

Is David Johnson playing this week?

After missing the last three games with a concussion, Johnson was slated to return from IR earlier this week, according to Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson. This will open up a 21 day window of practice for him and give him the opportunity to return at some point in the near future.

It is likely that Johnson will be up and running by week 13 as the Texans now designate him to return. He'll likely come back in and be the starter while pushing Duke Johnson into a backup role (or maybe a receiver role, given how thin Houston is at the position). Johnson won't have an injury label in training until officially activated by the IR, but he should be back on the field against the Colts this week, save for a setback.

Will Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed play this week?

Both Gaskin (knee) and Ahmed (shoulder) were absent last week and it's unclear when they will both be back. Even so, Gaskin seems to be more likely to return in week 13 than Ahmed.

Gaskin has been on the IR and has missed the last four games with an MCL sprain, but it seemed like he was on the verge of returning last week after making a game-time decision. Meanwhile, Ahmed missed training every day last week with his shoulder injury. Wednesday's workout was limited to starting this week, however. Maybe that's a positive sign that he's made good progress on his return from injury.

With those two backs slumped and DeAndre Washington (thigh) missed Wednesday's workout, the Dolphins' RB room is in an unpredictable state. For now, Gaskin and Ahmed are both on our week 13 RB rankings, but Ahmed's exercise status and reports on Gaskin's condition will be vital for Dolphins Fantasy owners to keep track of in the days to come.

Is D & # 39; Andre Swift playing this week?

Swift (concussion) was a playful choice for the Lions on Thanksgiving and ultimately didn't play. Before week 13, the outlook for him is a little brighter.

According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News, Lions interim coach Darrell Bevell is "optimistic" that Swift will have a chance to play this week. Given his proximity to Thanksgiving Day, it makes sense for him to return this week, provided he officially clears the concussion log.

Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson would shoulder the burden at RB in a tough matchup against the Bears if Swift couldn't get through protocol. In that case, both would be mid-range flex games, while Swift will be a high-end flex option this week when he plays.

Is Devonta Freeman playing this week?

There's little news about Freeman since he was put on IR a few weeks ago with an ankle / thigh injuries and is no longer eligible to play in week 13.

As Art Stapleton of The Record reports, Freeman was away for three weeks, but so far only two games for the Giants because they were goodbye. He has to miss three weeks to end his stay on IR.

So leave Freeman on the bench (or waiver wire) for at least another week. We'll see what his status is before week 14, but either way, he's a flex game at best splitting up with Wayne Gallman. He is unlikely to take the lead on his return. So don't try to rely on him as the RB2.
