I tried the controversial belly chain trend that I was really scared of

If you’ve checked out the latest runways or outfits to unfold in the fashion set, there is one literally quite small trend that you can’t really ignore: belly chains. I know, probably not what you expected – but the 2000s trend is back and stronger than ever. I have to admit that the accessory scared me the first time and never got into my closet, but I was suddenly convinced to give it a second chance.

I think the change of heart depends on the styling. When belly chains first hit my radar in the ’00s, they were worn with other trends I avoided like low pants and velor sweats, but now we’re seeing them paired with a more polished look. At Chanel, skirt suits, bikinis and jeans were given belly chains. At Jacquemus with a short cardigan and a suit. At Dior with a knitted sweater and logo trousers. And fashion fans have their own chic ways of styling them.

When I finally warmed myself to the belly chain trend, I decided to give it a try. See how I wear it ahead of time, where I’ve found inspiration, and lots of great shopping when you’re ready to add the fun part to your wardrobe. I call it the 2021 It Accessory.
