Everyone knows this feeling. You look into your closet feeling like there is nothing to wear, even though it is probably full of clothes. You're the likeness of Cher in Clueless, sulking in front of a disastrous pile of clothes. A few months ago I realized I was Cher.

As I work in fashion, new pieces are constantly being added to my closet and I never run out of old pieces. In addition, I trade in my fairly spacious LA apartment and sell my mobile closet – I mean the car – for a much smaller apartment in New York City, where even a standard closet is considered a luxury. Not only did I need routine closet cleaning to ensure clearer head space and smoother donning (although I definitely benefited from it). I had to totally take out my closet. When the team at the emerging resale app Mercari reached out to me to clear out my closet and sell my unwanted goods on the platform, I didn't think twice about it.

I worked with Mercari's head stylist and professional organizer, Anna De Souza, to clear my closet of the surplus, organize everything, and (hopefully) make money off of what I no longer needed. Two hours, four garbage bags of old clothes and a handful of Mercari deals later, and my closet and I were back in business. After working with an expert like De Souza, I learned how many mistakes kept me and my closet so disorganized – and I swear I won't repeat them.

Keep scrolling to learn more about my top takeaways and know what to throw away, how to organize my clothes, and how to make a profit using the app.
