Tessa Thompson wears Chanel runway samples and a great deal of classic in Sylvie's love
Sylvie's love Costume designer Phoenix Mellow has a "Bible of Resources" when it comes to sourcing vintage – and that's a very good thing because the historical film is set in the 1950s and early 1960s. Mellow, who's back too Black Panther and worked on it Strange things and mad Men, describes himself as obsessed with vintage clothing and shopping and calls dealers from across the country for projects. She worked closely with Tessa Thompson on Amazon Prime Sylvie's lovewho tells an old-fashioned love story of a young woman (Sylvie, played by Thompson) who meets saxophonist Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha) in New York. Thompson, who also plays Creed and THOR: Ragnarok, has an incredible style of its own and boldly sets limits with her fashion on the red carpet.
Mellow called donning Thompson a "collaboration". "She has her own sense of style and was the muse to bring her character together," the costume designer told POPSUGAR. "For most of the accessories, I brought out a tray of earrings, bracelets, and gloves so we could try the costume. I made them one of their favorites for the character." Mellow said the budget to produce this film was tiny and it had been pulled together in a short amount of time, which made the end result of her work all the more special. She named A Current Affair as her favorite source for online purchases and stores like The Way We Wore, Golyester, Jet Rag, Squaresville and Timeless Vixen in Los Angeles for one-of-a-kind finds. Ahead of us, Mellow reveals the cast's key styling tips and reveals their vintage secrets. While we don't all have access to production pieces like her, it's safe to say that Mellow also has a knack for getting to know the characters she works with and inspiration comes from that.
